GameStop Loses $63 Million, May Team Up With AMC As Stock Price Falls

Video game retailer GameStop, which has become a “meme stock” in recent months thanks in part to Reddit traders, has announced its latest earnings–and it was a mixed bag.

The company made $1.18 billion in revenue, which was up from $942 million in revenue during the same quarter last year Come from Sports betting site VPbet . However, GameStop did not post a profit. The company had a loss of $61.6 million, which is an improvement over the company’s loss of $111.3 million for the same period last year.

For the six-month period, meanwhile, GameStop made $2.46 billion in revenue, up from $1.96 billion, and had a loss of $128.4 million, compared to a loss of $277 million during the first half the year prior. The launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, along with the enduring popularity of the Switch, might have helped GameStop’s revenue in the past year.

Looking deeper into the earnings report, GameStop said it had $1.775 billion in cash on hand, and the bulk of this came from GameStop’s decision in June to issue 5 million shares of common stock, generating $1.1 billion in the process. This money, as announced previously, will be used for corporate purposes and for its growth initiatives.

On an earnings call, GameStop management said it had 4,642 stores globally at the end of the quarter, which is down from the year before due to the retailer’s decision to close stores that amounted to about 9% of its total store count. CEO Matt Furlong appeared on the earnings call, but only spoke for seven minutes to run through the earnings numbers. There was no question-and-answer session with analysts.

GameStop is looking to grow in the future. It recently signed a lease on a 530,000 square-foot fulfillment center in Reno, Nevada, which is expected to be operational in 2022. It adds to GameStop’s 700,000 square foot facility in York, Pennsylvania, which started shipping products during the quarter. When the Reno facility opens, it will give GameStop coverage on both coasts of the US for the first time in the company’s history to help expand its product offerings and speed up shipping.

In the wake of GameStop’s sales report, the company’s stock price dropped by around 7%.

In another development, another so-called “meme stock” that surged earlier this year thanks to Reddit’s WallStreetBets, the movie theater chain AMC, might be cooking up a partnership of some kind with GameStop. CEO Adam Aron told Fox Business that AMC’s new public investors called on AMC to work with GameStop in some capacity, and as a result of this, Aron opened discussions with GameStop.

“We have made contact with GameStop. We are talking. But it’s too early to say what the shape of what some cooperative marketing efforts might be,” Aron said.

When the first preview voyages for Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Disney Wish, took to the ocean, there was an interesting and slightly disturbing piece of Marvel Cinematic Universe information given to the world. During the Worlds of Marvel dining experience, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Evangeline Lilly (Wasp) appear in a pre-taped presentation to give a demonstration of quantum science. Of course, not before Rudd’s Scott Lang puts his foot in his mouth, though.

As previously reported, Lang touches on a fan-favorite MCU theory. Why didn’t Ant-Man simply shrink himself down, enter the butt of Thanos, and then turn giant, thus eliminating the mad titan? “I’ve heard a lot of chatter out there asking why I didn’t shrink down, go in, and kill Thanos in a really creative way,” he said in the video. “First of all, gross. Secondly, it’s much more complicated than that.” Of course, that’s where Wasp cuts him off.

How, exactly, did that end up in a Disney-sanctioned piece of MCU canon, though? Strangely enough, you can thank Loki executive producer Michael Waldron for it.

Speaking to GameSpot during a preview cruise aboard the Disney Wish, Walt Disney Imagineering senior creative director Danny Handke walked us through the process.

“The direction and the script come from Imagineering. We develop it and we have a partner at Marvel Studios, whose name is Dave Bushore,” he explained. “We usually bring in a Marvel writer to polish the script and it happened to be [Loki executive producer] Michael Waldron. Kevin [Feige] brought in Michael specifically to help punch up some of the jokes and he added the Thanos joke.”

Mind Zero Review

There’s a notorious production company called The Asylum. It’s not involved with gaming (at least, not yet), but you might know the company as the folks behind such films as Transmorphers, The Day the Earth Stopped, Atlantic Rim, and Android Cop. Its modus operandi is making half-baked films–mockbusters–that clearly want to ride on the themes and popularity of much more visible properties, while trying to remain different enough that they aren’t completely wholesale rip-offs of a source.

Why do I mention this? Because Mind Zero feels like The Asylum’s version of the Persona series. The similarity of the setting, story concepts, and overall design is undeniable. And like the inept mockbuster trying desperately to re-create the spectacle of its bigger inspiration, Mind Zero fails at anything beyond being occasionally mediocre.

The premise behind Mind Zero sounds familiar: in modern-day Saitama, Japan, mysterious happenings are afoot, with random people going on violent rampages due to a force called MIND. While the police are investigating these freak occurrences, a group of high school kids stumble into a portal to a strange alternate world where they are given weapons and told the secrets of MINDs: they are parallel beings from another world. Some MINDs are leaking out into the world we know and are preying on people with negative emotions, and it’s up to a scrappy team of kids (plus a grizzled supernatural detective) to investigate and stop the MINDs from opening doors from their world to ours, all while keeping their special powers a secret from the police.

Sound a bit familiar? It might, because it’s basically the plot of all of the various Persona games stitched together like some sort of Frankenstein’s monster. And much like said creature, Mind Zero’s plot trudges along with the speed of molasses for a good chunk of the game. Even in the most cinematic-heavy Japanese role-playing games, there are usually things developing in the story when you’re not dungeon-crawling. Mind Zero takes its sweet time just getting past the basic “MINDs are bad; let’s find and fight them” conceit into something more substantial.

But while other RPGs might emphasize interactions between characters to help make up for a weak main plot, Mind Zero gives you a cast of teenagers whose personalities fall into one of two categories: incredibly irritating all the time or about as well defined and interesting as a brick. The lead character, Kei, is so aloof and angsty that he may as well have been a mass-produced unit purchased straight from JRPG Hero Stereotype Industries Inc. It wasn’t long after my introduction to him that I was wishing I could have a silent lead this time.

Mind Zero’s plot trudges along with the speed of molasses for a good chunk of the game.

Other characters have one-note traits and are easily summed up in single sentences: “He won’t shut up ever about buying dumb crap,” “She’s kind of stupid in a way that’s supposed to be endearing but isn’t,” “She has no discernible personality to speak of, but she fights stuff, so she’s OK,” and so on. The game’s most interesting characters end up being Ogata, the grizzled detective and sole adult on your team, and the antagonists that emerge later on. The sheer dullness or unlikability of everyone makes the game’s attempts to present short vignettes of interaction between characters (akin to Persona’s social-link sequences) laughable.

The combat and exploration are better than the story, though that’s not really saying much. Dungeons are presented as first-person-view mazes, and a map fills out as you explore, making things much easier for you–especially since the dungeons become quite expansive, quite fast. What they never really become, however, is attractive. The visuals for these settings are bland and uninspired (the fact that setting assets are recycled by the third major dungeon is seriously off-putting), and the layout of the mazes is sprawling and confusing, with only a few uninteresting gimmicks to break up the monotony.

Combat, however, has a few interesting elements. Up to three characters can participate in combat, and they have three separate meters each: life points, mind points, and technical points. Life points are pretty easy to grasp: lose them all, and the character is out of commission. Mind points determine the health of a character’s MIND; these points recover over time unless the MIND is on-field. Finally, technical points are used to activate skills of MINDs. They also recover over the course of combat.

These gauges are all very important to keep track of, because they all affect the most crucial element of combat in Mind Zero: the usage of the MINDs, which are summoned with the R trigger. Characters have differing sets of commands depending on whether or not their MINDs are active on the field: defense, item, and escape commands can only be used sans a MIND, while skills are only available with MINDs summoned. MINDs alter other elements as well. Normally, whenever characters are attacked by enemies, they lose LP. However, if their MINDs are active when characters are hit, they lose MP instead of LP, thus rendering MINDs as something of a protective shield. If all MP is lost to attacks, however, characters’ MINDs are broken, and the characters are stunned and unable to summon their MINDs again for a few turns. This adds an element of risk to simply putting one’s MIND out as a meatshield against enemies.

Active MINDs improve standard attack power slightly and give access to skills, which consume TP and sometimes LP when used. The number of skills that can be equipped is determined by a character’s level, and skill-granting cards can be equipped, enhanced, and shuffled about from character to character outside of combat. Assembling a solid skill set is crucial to success, though the skills’ interchangeability robs characters of individual combat importance, so you’ll tend to focus on leveling up a few characters, which may come back to bite you at certain story points. Finally, there’s the burst command, which can be used with MINDs turned on or off Come from Sports betting site VPbet . Burst allows for a command to be executed instantaneously at a significant TP cost–it’s an expensive godsend when emergency healing, absolute escape, or immediate fatal damage on a foe is needed.

All of these aspects to fighting seem as if they should be great, and there are boss battles where the combat elements get a chance to shine. The problem comes from the sheer tedium of the regular enemy encounters, and the constant difficulty spikes that accompany them. There’s really no such thing as a quick battle in Mind Zero: enemies not only soak up and deal a lot of damage (even on the lowest difficulty), but they also have elemental and anti-MIND affiliations that you must pay attention to.

It’s one thing for random RPG battles to require you to at least pay attention to not suffer an embarrassing death, but the amount of command shuffling, MIND toggling, and bursting just to kill some cannon-fodder is downright annoying, especially when you just want to explore and get somewhere. Making it all worse is the massive difficulty spike that arrives with each new dungeon; you’ll be finishing many fights by the skin of your teeth until you can eke out a couple of extra levels for your crew each time there’s a new location introduced. After just a few hours in, you grow to loathe the random encounters (and the irritating music that accompanies them), but at least you’ll be thankful for the R button fast-forward feature to make them slightly less of a pain.

There are a few high points beyond good combat ideas: the artwork for the MINDs and characters is nice, and the localization gives conversations a natural flow, but the snoozefest of a story and monotonous encounters make playing Mind Zero feel like work. To top it all off, the finale is atrocious, failing to deliver any answers to the questions the story poses (and, in fact, creating new ones), all while suggesting a follow-up that may or may not ever happen. After the utterly laborious process of completing the game, the unsatisfying finale is a slap in the face. But hey, at least you get a post-game dungeon to slog through!

The Vita isn’t hurting for JRPGs, but even if you’ve already played and finished Demon Gaze, Ys: Memories of Celceta, and Persona 4 Golden, it’s best to skip Mind Zero. Like The Asylum’s film oeuvre, Mind Zero is capable, at times, of at least holding your attention, but it’s rarely entertaining, and when you’re done, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t invest your time in a superior alternative instead.

The Pokemon Company Announces Preschool Learning Books

Wizards Of The Coast Sends Pinkertons To YouTuber's House For Magic Cards

Leaks are a ubiquitous part of gaming these days, but Magic The Gathering owner Wizards of the Coast has had a more aggressive response than most. The company apparently sent Pinkerton agents to retrieve unreleased Magic cards that a YouTuber recently showed off in a video.

According to a response video by the YouTuber, Dan Cannon, the agents showed up at their house and frightened the content creator’s wife. The agents then repossessed the cards and told Cannon to take the videos down. Cannon also told Kotaku that the agents threatened them with jail time and up to $200,000 in fines if they did not cooperate, and that they wanted to search their entire collection of cards for stolen property. Wizards of the Coast confirmed to Kotaku and other outlets that the Pinkertons were employed as a part of its investigation.

Today, Pinkerton advertises itself as a security and risk management firm under the umbrella group Securitas AB. The firm is arguably better-known for the role it played in fighting against organized labor in the 19th and early 20th centuries, serving as a private law enforcement firm for Gilded Age industrialists who fought against unionization. A 2020 report from Motherboard said that Amazon employed the firm to spy on its warehouse workers amid attempts to unionize. Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast came under fire when the company attempted to change the legal framework surrounding D&D third-party content, and it was ultimately forced to abandon that action.

Marvel Delays Entire 2022 Slate, Including Doctor Strange 2 And Black Panther 2

Disney has delayed several of its upcoming Marvel movies, as well as non-MCU releases such as the latest Indiana Jones film. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, Thor: Love And Thunder, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have all shifted to later dates in 2022.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness was previously scheduled to arrive in March next year, but will now hit theaters on May 6. Thor: Love And Thunder will move back to August 7 from a June date, while Black Panther: Wakanda Forever shifts from August to November 11.

Inevitably, the result of these delays also has a knock-on effect on the Marvel movies that were scheduled to arrive in late 2022 and 2023. The Marvels moves to February 2023, with Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania now arriving in July 2023.

In addition, Disney has also pushed back the release of the currently-titled fifth Indiana Jones film an entire year. It will now hit theaters on June 30, 2023. The film, which stars Harrison Ford and is directed by James Mangold, is currently in production in Italy.

The studio has also removed two untitled non-Marvel movies from the schedule. The full list of new release dates is:

Major Macau Casino Incurs $727k Loss Due to Counterfeit Chips

On August 21, 2023, one of the most prominent casinos on the Cotai Strip in Macau suffered a loss of HK$5.7 million (US$727,000) after a criminal group used fake chips to gamble in the casino. The group of eight men used a total of 804 chips to defraud the casino and tried to flee to mainland China. Macau police arrested two of them and is still looking for six other fugitives, reported Inside Asian Gaming (IAG).

Fake Chips Detected for Unusual Surface Finish:

The name of the casino property has not been reported, but the money lost is surely significant for any operator. The fraud was reportedly detected by a casino dealer who retrieved chips from a table and noticed an unusual surface finish of 10 chips each worth HK$10,000 (US$1,275). The chips reportedly felt rough and didn’t seem authentic. They were swiftly identified as counterfeited for they did not contain the respective identification tag, according to IAG.

Two Fraudsters Arrested:

As reported, the casino called the police and the two mainland China men were immediately arrested. These two men reportedly had 200 counterfeit chips worth HK$2.4 million (US$306,000), but the police investigation soon revealed that the fraudulent group of at least eight people was involved in the fraud. The group ”operated” for at least two hours inside the gambling facility and circulated the fake chips across the gaming tables and regular gamblers, IAG reports.

Mainland China Bound:

After the arrest of two group members, at least six other companions fled from Macau the same night. According to GGRAsia, they were bound for mainland China via the Border Gate and the police is looking for them. During the investigation, the police reportedly found 112 fake chips in a waste incineration facility. As these counterfeited chips were similar to those used in the affected casino property, police reportedly believes that the runaway members of the fraudulent group disposed of the load on their way to the mainland.

Chip Count Revealed the Loss:

According to IAG, the casino staff counted the chips and the initial count established that 493 fake chips had been used at the property. These chips were reportedly exchanged by 10 gamblers to win more than HK$700,000 (US$89,260). As indicated above, the count may either include or exclude the 200 chips found with the two arrested fraudsters, as well as the 112 chips found in the incineration facility and elsewhere, therefore the physical count was the only method available to establish the approximate loss.

In any case, the physical count reportedly arrived at 804 chips found during the investigation to incur a loss of at least  HK$5.7 million (US$727,000) to the reputable casino resort in the Cotai Strip.
